About

Established in 1966, the Aerospace Engineering Department at IIT Bombay is among the institute’s oldest, with a strong interdisciplinary and systems-oriented focus, and offers comprehensive education and research opportunities as a mid-sized department. Building on its core strengths while aligning with emerging technology trends, the department is active in diverse research areas such as bio-fuels, advanced combustion, noise reduction, autonomous flight, reduced-order models, high-performance computing, rotary-wing aerodynamics, and multidisciplinary design optimization, with a major thrust toward unmanned air systems, including mini and micro vehicles, supported by substantial funding to create a drone research ecosystem in Maharashtra. The department regularly updates its undergraduate curriculum to match evolving research and employment landscapes, emphasizing electives, hands-on learning, and entrepreneurial pathways in line with Institute reforms.
