Directed Study I and II: 6
credits
Feb. 25, 2007
Each of the two units to have a seperate course no. Students may
do none, only I, or both I and II in different semesters, subject to
availability.
Each unit to be registered for, and performed under, the
supervison of a guide over the duration of a semester. In cases where a
student takes two units of directed study, they are to be in different
semesters, and may or may not be under the same supervisor. Even when
performed under the same guide, they may or may not be in continuation.
In other words, the two units are to be viewed as operationally
independent.
Each unit may involve a literature survey (seminar),
design/development/fabrication/testing of equipment/prototype, design
project, research project, design/development of algorithms/software,
collection of experimental data using sophisticated methods/equipment,
or design of an experiment, @ 6-8 hours per week.
The registration and evaluation to be as per the following norms: (this
is a suggestion for discussion. Final norms as approved by DUGC).
1) Before registration, student to submit a brief one-page proposal
outlining the actual work envisaged.
2) Guide to evaluate and give a letter grade at the end of the
semester. Expected that the guide will teach the student to properly
document work done and results achieved. Preferable that student should
present work to all. Not necessary that evaluation should be explicitly
based on report/presentation, and that it should involve other faculty
as examiner etc.
3) Along with the letter grade, guide to compulsarily submit a brief
one page report to DUGC outlining student's work, results achieved,
what the evaluation was based on, and explicitly listing
skills/knowledge learnt by the student. DUGC to ask for more
information if necessary.
