Software Lab
Mar.
12, 2007
Objective: To
expose students to the use of available packages for solving
engineering problems of moderate complexity having a real world
flavour. Problems may be analysis problems of slightly higher
complexity, or design problems of slightly lower complexity.
Mode: Students spend
upto three weeks working on problems in each of the following areas
using available software packages (preferably open source) relevant to
the area.
- CFD: exercise to include grid generation, solution,
post-processing, display (Problem:
Not all students will have taken CFD)
- FEM: exercise to include discretization, solution,
post-processing, display (Problem:
not all studemts will have taken FEM)
- Trajectory optimization/ orbit design: either launch vehicle
trajectory optimization, or orbit design for a spacecraft (Problem: all students won't have
optimization).
- A small engineering optimization problem involving some
mutidisciplinary analysis (Problem:
not all students will have taken optimization)
Issues:
- Space and PCs required for conducting the lab
- Lab will require contributions from all groups. Administration.
- Input from propulsion side (AMP to suggest possibilities).
