Biography:


Prior to joining IITB, Dr. Hablani was a Visiting Faculty Professor at the Department of Aerospace Engineering, IIT Kanpur, during July 2008 - July 2009, where he taught three graduate courses concerning satellite orbits; spacecraft guidance, navigation, and control; and integrated air navigation.  In addition, he conducted research with B. Tech students concerning aircraft navigation aided by ISRO’s GAGAN (GPS Aided Geostationary Augmented Navigation) and IRNSS (Indian Regional Navigation Satellite System) programs; radar imaging surveillance satellites; attitude determination, control, and GPS-based navigation of nanosatellites. 

Before returning to India in July 2008, Dr. Hablani was with The Boeing Company (Rockwell International heritage). His last position in the Company was Technical Fellow and Scientist 6.  His areas of expertise/interest include satellite-based navigation; spacecraft guidance and navigation for rendezvous; guidance and control of interplanetary spacecraft; multi-body flexible spacecraft dynamics and control; attitude determination and control of three-axis stabilized, bias momentum, and spin-stabilized satellites; target acquisition, precision pointing and tracking satellites; exo-atmospheric interceptor guidance; dynamics, stability, and guidance of parachutes for precision landing.

During twenty-six years at the Boeing/Rockwell Company, Dr. Hablani was involved with advanced programs, in-house research and development, and satellite systems testbed of new technologies for future spacecraft. His principal responsibility was of detailed advanced design and digital simulation of various aspects of guidance, navigation, and control of spacecraft, strategic interceptors, and parachutes. 

During the years 2000-2004, he developed innovative guidance and relative navigation algorithms and laser range finder pointing technology for autonomous spacecraft rendezvous. During 1996-2000, Dr. Hablani developed novel guidance and Kalman filtering techniques for relative navigation, and line-of-sight rate estimation for exoatmospheric interceptors. These innovations led to patents and awards.

Hablani is a recipient of the prestig­ious Leonardo da Vinci (the Spirit of the Renaissance) Engineer of the Year 1992 Award. He has three patents. He received several Innovation and Invention, and Patent Issuance awards for his novel algorithms, designs, and approaches related to pointing technology for autonomous spacecraft rendezvous, miss distance error analysis of strategic interceptors, magnetic attitude control of bias momentum space­craft, magnetic momentum removal, integral pulse frequency modulation reaction jet controller, and zero-residual-energy minimum-time slew of flexible spacecraft.

Hablani’s extensive contributions over the years are published with approval in refereed journal papers, mostly in the AIAA Journal of Guidance, Control, and Dynamics under sole authorship; and conference papers mostly in the AIAA Guidance, Navigation and Control or NASA/Goddard Flight Mechanics and Estimation Theory symposia. From these, more significant ones and the most cited according to Scopus are described below. His one paper is translated in Russian also.

During the years 2000-2005, Dr. Hablani developed a course on Guidance, Navigation and Control of Spacecraft and Strategic Interceptors, and presented it Boeing wide.  The course material comprised some 1400 charts in 13 chapters.

Dr. Hablani was an Associate Editor of the AIAA Journal of Guidance, Control, and Dynamics during 1999-2011; presently, he is International Adviser (India) of the Journal, and an Associate Fellow of AIAA since 1994.  He has chaired sessions in the AIAA GN&C conferences, organized one on Spacecraft Rendezvous GN&C Technology for the conference in the year 2005. 

During 1980-’82, Dr. Hablani was a NASA National Research Council Resident Associate at Johnson Space Center (October 1980-’82). The research in this duration focused on multi-body dynamics of flexible spacecraft, modal analysis of flexible bias-momentum spacecraft, and control of flexible spacecraft. Presented a course on dynamics and control of flexible remote manipulator of Space Shuttle to NASA JSC engineers

In 2003, Dr. Hablani was honored as a Distinguished Alumnus of the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, India.
