• The NTSB opened its doors on April 1, 1967.

• Although independent, it relied initially on the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) for funding and administrative support.

• In 1975, all organizational ties to DOT were cut off. The NTSB is not part of DOT now.

• What the Organisation does :-

• Investigates every civil aviation accident in the United States and significant accidents in the other modes of transportation -- railroad, highway, marine and pipeline

• Issuing safety recommendations aimed at preventing future accidents.

• The NTSB is responsible for maintaining the government's data base of civil aviation accidents.

• The NTSB has Since its inception in 1967, the NTSB has investigated more than 100,000 aviation accidents and thousands of surface transportation accidents.

• Issued almost 10,000 recommendations in all transportation modes to more than 1,250 recipients.

1. To prevent future accidents, save lives, and reduce injuries and property damage.

- Follow-up to ensure implementation of safety improvements that have been identified previously.

- Make recommendations to prevent accidents by conducting thorough accident and incident investigations

II) To ensure that survivors and families of victims of transportation accidents receive timely, compassionate assistance from the operator, other government agencies, and community service organizations.

III) To provide aviators and mariners with fair, timely, independent appellate review of certificate actions taken by the FAA and the US Coast Guard.
