Indian Institute of Technology Bombay
Ph.D. admissions 2011

Dear Ph.D. applicant,

Welcome to the Department of Aerospace Engineering at IIT Bombay. The Department bears a high reputation in the academic world and is active in research with a good research infrastructure and highly qualified/skilled faculty members of international repute. The Ph.D. program in the department runs for 4 calendar years beginning with an apt research-training program during the first year. We provide a friendly, free and fair academic environment to the research scholars with an opportunity to gain cutting edge technical skills and confidence, resulting in a fine professional career that can realize their dreams and ambitions.

We are delighted to know that you are interested in joining our research effort. The following links should guide you through the process of application and the procedure of admission.

1. Application forms/procedure

2. Admission procedure

The procedure of admission is threefold as described below:

i) Interaction/discussion with the faculty members : The Ph.D. applicants are advised to contact the faculty members working in the areas of research they wish to pursue. They should personally meet with the concerned faculty members, preferably before the technical interview in order to have a perspective of the area of interest, which may facilitate their performance in the interview.

ii) Objective type written test : The applicants will be asked to write an objective type written test in the beginning. This would enable the department to assess the applicants’ basic engineering (relevant discipline) and mathematical skills. The duration of the test will be an hour.

iii) Technical Interview : After the written test, a technical interview will be conducted, which will be of a duration of 30 to 45 minutes. The applicants are expected to come prepared with the general engineering mathematics and the basic engineering subjects relevant to the areas of research they have chosen. They must also be prepared to discuss the Master's thesis work with a good degree of clarity. Applicants should also be able to clearly articulate their motivation for research as well as the preference for research areas, confidently. The performance in the written test and the interview will be considered for selection.
