Admission Procedure Outline:

The Ph.D. admission procedure is divided into the following stages:

  1. Preparatory stage:
  • Review information provided on this website
  • Attend open-house informational session
  • Identify faculty members whose works align well with your research interests. The  Faculty information slides document is linked on this page.
  • Mandatorily select a specialization (from Aerodynamics, Dynamics and Control, Propulsion, Structures) on which you will take the entrance test, based on the specialization of the identified faculty members
  • Arrange and install necessary tools for the online entrance test
  • Take mandatory Mock test
  1. Online entrance test:
  •   Take 1.5 hours exam (another 1.5 hours kept as buffer in case of internet glitches)
  •   Test has 15 marks for comprehension and math.
  •   Test has another 15 marks for specialization-specific questions
  •   Results to be announced on Aerospace department website
  1. Online interview:
  • 15-minute to 45-minute-long panel interviews of the candidates shortlisted after the written test.
  • Results to be declared by the academic office.
    • Action Items for the Applicants:

    1. Attend the open-house session after going through this document. See details in table below.
    2. Study the faculty information slides and identify up to 3 faculty members whose work aligns well with your research interest. You also need to select the specialization (between Aerodynamics, Dynamics and Control, Propulsion, Structures) based on the specialization of the faculty members you identified. Your online exam and the interviews will be based on the specialization you select. If your interests are cross-disciplinary, select the specialization that best fits your interests and strengths, and appear for the entrance test and interview in this specialization. You may be considered for an interview in the other specialization panel if found fit by the first one. You are required to fill the “Specialization and Faculty Interest” within the time window mentioned in the table below, failing which you will not be able to take the entrance test.
    3. There will be a mandatory Mock Test a few days before the actual test to familiarize you with the online exam setup. You can join either one of the 3 slots as mentioned in the table below. Not participating in the mock test will automatically disqualify you from the admission process.
    4. You will need to install the SAFE App on your Android or iOS phone and follow the steps mentioned in the “SAFE Login Procedure” on the department website. Use your Department Registration Number (example: “RAE20XXXXXXX”) as your “Roll Number”. You may also go through this YouTube channel for more information on SAFE.
    5. Study the “Standard Operating Procedure for Online Exam” available on the department website for the online exam and make necessary arrangements before the Mock test (arrange for two devices, install the necessary applications on both, and identify an appropriate spot for the exam).
    6. Register for your selected specialization’s online entrance test on the SAFE App using the registration code which will be shared with you a day before the test, and download the test on the App well before the actual test (see timeline below). Appear for the test for your selected specialization following the guidelines. Any attempt to use unfair practices at any stage will lead to disqualification from the admission process.
    7. Candidates will be informed if they are shortlisted from the entrance test by email as well as by an announcement on the department website. Once shortlisted, candidates should submit the detailed “Research Interest and Statement of Purpose” form within the time window specified below. They must also submit the self-recorded video of their entrance test.
    8. Candidates shortlisted from the entrance test must appear for the in-person interviews to be conducted by a panel of faculty members from the selected specialization. The interview will be conducted online, within a time slot to be communicated after the shortlisting.
    9. You should not come to the IIT Bombay campus at any point of the admission process.
