Adoption of Open Source in science and engineering education

I am one of the PI's for the FOSSEE project. I manage the Python group.

FOSSEE project is part of the National Mission on Education through ICT with the thrust area being "Adaptation and deployment of open source simulation packages equivalent to proprietary software, funded by MHRD, based at the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IITB).

More up-to-date information is available at http://fossee.in. The project has been promimently featured at the MHRD website on their main page.

Old Projects

Interactive visualization of weather data using Mayavi

This project is part of the NMITLI sponsored project on Mesoscale modelling for monsoon related weather predictions - Phase II. This project involves several different organizations including NAL, JNCASR, TIFR, Encore and IIT Bombay. All project positions for this project are filled. The project ends in September, 2009.

  • The goal was to visualize atmospheric weather data using Mayavi.

  • The project is directly relevant to improving weather modelling. There is a significant impact on lives of people in India if the models can be improved. Good visualization tools will go a long way towards this. The entire project is one of national importance.

Simulation of Horizontal axis wind turbines

This involved the computational simulation of horizontal axis wind turbines (HAWTs).
